Kathleen Grissom was born in Los Angeles, California. In her eighties, she sold her first book, a memoir about growing up as an African-American in the South, at a writer's conference. She has written nine novels and other works of nonfiction, including two books about the Civil War. She has received many awards for her writing, including a Gold Pen Award from the Mystery Writers of America and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Southern Christian Writers Conference.
